Do You Know How To Pack Properly? How To Make Apartment Moving Easier

Posted on

How can the way you pack make your move easier? You've hired movers—and want to do everything you can to save time, energy, and money on your moving day. What does packing have to do with these types of savings? Take a look at what you need to know about the packing process, apartment moving, and professional contractors.

When Should You Pack?

Don't wait until the last minute to pack your apartment for a move. This means you need to pack everything (except for the items you will use the day of your move or put into a take-along bag) before the movers arrive. Create a packing timeline that works for you and your household. This can help you to stay on track and pack steadily during the last few weeks or days before your move.

Failure to pack everything in advance of your move-out day will slow down the apartment movers. Instead of starting the job immediately after they arrive, the contractors will need to wait for you to add items to containers or finish taping boxes. This wastes their time and could waste your money. Avoid paying more for additional wasted hours and have everything ready to go the night before the movers arrive.

How Can You Make the Move Easier?

Even though you're moving from an apartment and not an entire house, you still need to pack wisely. To make an apartment move easier on you, your roommates or other household members, and the movers, you should:

  • Distribute the weight. Avoid filling some of the containers with heavy items and others with your lighter belongings. Instead of this approach, evenly distribute the weight. This reduces the mid-move breakage risk and makes it easier for the movers to carry the containers.

  • Close lids or tape box tops. Don't let everything (or anything) spill out of the containers during the move. Secure lids on plastic bins tightly and tape cardboard boxes closed.

  • Label everything. This strategy helps the movers to find and place your containers. It can also make it easier for you (or your household members) to unpack. Include the contents of each container and the room it belongs to on each label.

Along with the name of the contents and the room, add a category and special directions to the label. Use larger labels or extra labels to make these directions more noticeable. You can also ask the moving contractor what types of directions or special instructions they find helpful during a move.
